'The nearest is the best school'
by Husna Inayathullah
Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has introduced a new
concept known as the 'The nearest is the best school' to reduce the
student population in popular leading schools and develop the other
schools in the region. "My new concept is a practical solution for
parents who try to enroll their children in popular schools, and, to
upgrade all other schools with facilities," he said. The Ministry will
select two schools from each Divisional Secretariat area and develop
them by providing the facilities under the new concept.
Zonal Educational Offices have been tasked to carryout the project by
evaluating certain schools. Accordingly there are 607 schools selected
in the island which will be developed such as Ananda, Royal and Visakha
and known as "SMART SCHOOLS".
