Charity Music Project
The Junior School's Grade five and six students of the British School
in Colombo hosted a 'Charity Music Project' for three days recently. It
brought together children from Kurunegala and Mullaitivu through music
using English as the link language. The British School in Colombo has
supported The Music Project for many years.
The children spent the weekend with the Junior students in Colombo.
They played orchestral instruments and showcased their talents. The
students were put into eight groups.
The groups were taught a new piece to play on the recorder. They
practised and all played together. It was a fantastic sound with all 300
children playing. Each group made a different musical instrument out of
every-day objects, paper and natural resources. The students showed the
instruments to each other and demonstrated the sound they made.
A fund-raising concert for the Music Project was held in the evening.
It was filled with music, song and dance from the British School
students and The Music Project students.
The next day, students conducted an activity in groups. The children
from the Music Project enjoyed splashing themselves in the pool. They
made music with ICT and use paint to create a picture based on a piece
of music. They printed a picture to take home. In Rounders, it was found
that for some of the children it was very similar to a game they played
in their villages. It was an excellent morning full of excitement.
The third day was a busy morning as the Music Project students packed
their belongings, and got ready for the long journey home.
Children from different backgrounds came together through music, made
new friends and developed leadership and collaborative skills. The
British School in Colombo hopes to get together again next year.
