Anniversary of Independence celebrated in Kathmandu
The embassy of Sri Lanka in Kathmandu celebrated Sri Lanka's 68th
Anniversary of Independence on February 4, 2016 at the Chancery with the
hoisting of the national flag by Ambassador W. M. Senevirathna and
singing the national anthem followed by a two-minute silence observed in
honour of national heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country.
Ambassador Senevirathna and other Sri Lankan nationals lit the oil
lamp. Religious observances were conducted by bhikkhus and different
religious dignitaries such as Most Ven. Dr. Gnanapurnika Maha Thero-Deputy
Sanga Nayaka of Nepal and Most Ven. Maitri Maha Thero, Pandit Hem
Sharma, Md.Maulana Iqbal and Dr. Simon Pandey.
National Day messages of President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime
Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, and Minister of External Affairs Mangala
Samaraweera were read in Sinhala, Tamil and English.
Sri Lankans living in Nepal and personnel who assisted in the
celebrations participated. The head of mission said how important it was
for Sri Lankan expatriates to maintain ties and briefed about government
policy on development in Sri Lanka and bilateral relations between Sri
Lanka and Nepal.
An alms giving was organised at the official residence of the
ambassador. Over 20 members of the Maha Sangha were present at the
event.
Rotary
Club of Wattala donates gift packs
The Rotary Club of Wattala organised the annual donation of gift
packs. Over 75 packs of dry rations, each worth Rs. 2,500, were
distributed. The project served 75 families in and around Wattala.
President- Rtn. Vinothan Selvam, Vice President- Rtn. Dinesh Selliah,
Secretary-Rtn. Raj Rajalingam, Asst. Secretary -Rtn. Dr. Dilhan S.
Jayatilleke, Treasurer-Rtn. Mohan S. Mohanadas, Past President - Rtn.
Lakshman Gunawardena, Sergeant At Arms- Rtn. P. Sekar along with Members
Rtn.Gajendra Puvendran, Rtn. Kethees Selvam, Rtn. F. Claude Fernando and
Rtn. Thilak Perera of the Rotary Club of Wattala was also present.
The gift packs were sponsored by members of the Rotary Club of
Wattala.
