The depths into which club rugby has fallen has been clearly
demonstrated by the fact that some matches are witnessed by less than
two dozen spectators during the current inter club Dialog League
championships.
Some analysts contend that club rugby has virtually gone out of hand
to the point that four players from Navy, Suranga Pushpakumara, Danushka
Perera, Omalka Gunaratne and Dulanjana Wijesinghe took it upon
themselves to sport controversial wrist bands in support of team-mate
Yoshitha Rajapaksa who is in remand custody over financial
irregularities.
Officials of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union say they are not in
any position to correct the situation and reorganize club rugby to bring
back the fans as the sport is now administered by a government
bureaucrat.
Also for the first time in the history of club rugby, the champion
team emerged even before the second round matches were to begin, in this
case Kandy Sports Club. |
