More accidents due to Vesak illuminations
By Carol Aloysius
Electrocution from illuminations in homes, pandals and most buildings in the
city during Vesak, has hit a new high resulting in hospitalisation and even
fatalities, National Hospital sources said.In recent years, more victims of
electrocution had been admitted to the Accident Service than those with burns
from candles and oil lamps in lanterns, Director, Accident Service, Dr. Mrs.
Samindi Samarakoon told the Sunday Observer.
We can expect more victims this year as many persons are in the habit of
pirating power to illuminate their homes. Faulty lines exposed on the roads can
be dangerous, especially after rains. Inspect the roads carefully while
sight-seeing and avoid walking on any exposed wires, she said. She also
cautioned parents against permitting children handle electrical gadgets
including illuminations.
With falls from heights also on the rise during Vesak, she advised those
climbing rooftops, or ladders to illuminate pandals to minimise injuries from
falls by placing foam sheets or mattresses on the ground.
Admission to hospitals from electrocution due to using electrical gadgets during
lightning was also common at this time, she said.
She advised owners of lap tops, and mobile phones to refrain from charging them
during lightning. Accidents due to speeding or overloaded vehicles can also be
avoided by paying more attention to road rules, she said. |
