Lanka Bell to go ahead with expansion Lanka Bell one of the largest Board of Investment companies in Sri Lanka with an investment of over US $ 150 million and providing digital wireless local loop telecommunication services, is now set to move into its next phase in terms of service expansions. "Prospects for progress in the industry look very promising with the current developments taking place in the country," said Managing Director of Lanka Bell, Joey V. Mendoza. "Cost of installation has been rising due to equipment and material having to be purchased at higher prices as a result of the devaluation of the rupee. The continuing power cuts on the other hand have increased the cost of maintaining customer subscriber lines. The number of batteries and power unit replacements at customer premises had more than tripled in the last few months. These factors, along with the impending tariff revision not taking place since June 2000 have been major strains on the company's operating viability," he said. "In spite of all the above, we look positively to implementing the next phase of our planned service expansion programmes, moving to the outstations and maintaining our current focus on the small and medium industries corporation sectors" he added. "This includes upgraded data network solutions and the introduction of wireless broadband technology in partnership with leading global players in the market," said Mr. Mendoza. |
