Australian BIT for local students

Singapore Informatics Computer Institute launched the Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) program of the University of Southern Queensland (USQ), Australia in Sri Lanka recently.

The High Commissioner for Australia in Sri Lanka, David Binns and USQ's International Program Director, David Fuss took part in the launch.

The BIT program is specially for those who wish to pursue a career in the ever-changing IT industry and is designed to equip students with computing knowledge and skills required to meet the demand of IT professionals in today's knowledge-based economy. Students can select from six majors to specialise in - Applied computer science, Software engineering, Computer software development, Networking, Information Technology Management and Industrial computing.

BIT is fully accredited by the Australian Computer Society which has over 16,000 members throughout the world.

The University of Southern Queensland is Australia's 12th largest university and was set up in 1967. the fully-funded university enables students to either study in the campus or go for distance learning. Over 20,000 international students have enroled there.

USQ is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. It won Australia's University of the Year 2000-2001 award given by Good Universities Guide for Developing the e-University' and Best Global university for Distance Education given by International Council for Open and Distance Education, Norway in 1999.

Meanwhile, The International Baccalaureate (IB) an academically rigorous qualification for university entrance which is recognised worldwide, is offered in Sri Lanka by the Overseas School of Colombo (OCS) currently, the IB diploma is accepted as an entrance qualification in over 300 universities around the world and the IB course is offered in over 650 schools in 90 countries including Sri Lanka, where the full IB Diploma program is offered by OCS.

The IB Diploma is awarded to students after a two year course of study. It was founded on elements from different national systems and developed in 1963. Currently, the IB Program is administered by the International Baccalaureate Organisation based in Switzerland.

The IB has received wide acceptance from ministries of education around the world, while universities in the UK, Europe, Australia, the USA, New Zealand and India accept students with the IB diploma.

The Overseas School, apart from the regular IB program, also has an IB Scholarship Program available only for Sri Lankan nationals who have completed Grade 10 or its equivalent.
