Lanka makes itself heard at Spice Congress Over 400 participants from all the spice producing, processing, trading and consuming countries took part in the sixth World Spice Congress held in Cochin, India, under the theme 'Challenging the Past - Defining the Future'. Sri Lanka had the largest delegation at the event. It was headed by Chairman, Spices and Allied Products Producers' and Traders' Association SAPPTA. At the Congress, the Lankan delegation made strong representations to bifurcate cinnamon from cassia in the H.S. Code and also the intentions to protect cinnamon under the geographical indications of the Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights System. It was indicated, that vanilla still has an untapped market as the demand for natural vanilla is not met. The immediate and mid-term future of cloves, nutmeg and mace was said to be favourable for producers. As there is over-production of pepper in the world, downward pressure on prices of pepper is likely if consumption patterns remain unchanged. Mr. De Silva and Vice Chairman of SAPPTA, Dr. D. Nugawela also attended the meeting of the International Organisation of Spice Trade Associations of which SAPPTA is a founder member. |
