Market for cable manufacturers in India

Sri Lanka cable manufacturers stand to benefit from the Indo-Lanka Free Trade Agreement as enamelled winding wire (EWW), - although in Sri Lanka's negative list, is not included in India's negative list.

Sri Lankan cable manufacturers, therefore, can export to India, enjoying, at present, a 50 per cent duty concession. After February 2003, a 100 per cent duty concession is expected. India's annual EWW consumption is 60,000 metric tons, Alucop Cables Limited said.

The cable and enamelled winding wire manufacturer recently qualified for the ISO 9001 system certification from Sri Lanka Standards Institution.

Alucop Cables was established in 1978 and was acquired by Sierra Cables Limited a fully owned subsidiary of Sierra Construction Limited, in 2000. Its factory was re-located at Kaduwela in 2001 and advanced machinery was installed to expand the capacity and product range.

EWW is manufactured by machines from Austria and Italy using copper from Australia and Korea and enamel solutions from France. The plant has a capacity of over 1000UT per year. Winding wires are used for transformers, larger relays, choke coils and motors.

The company said it has installed machinery to manufacture low voltage armoured cables, multi-core cables and aerial bundle cables and is about to commence production. Alucop's present product range includes building wires, power cables, indoor and outdoor telephone cables, aluminium conductors, auto cables, flexible cords and cables, coaxial antenna cables and EWW.

The company sells its products to small volume users through its distributor network, industrial users and overseas customers.
