Eco tourism blooms in Sri Lanka

A wide range of novel and unique eco attractions are being offered to tourists at Deer Park Hotel, Giritale.

Among them are 'jungle BBQ', elephant rides in the jungles in and round the Deer Park Hotel visits to villages, and jungle weddings for tourists who select Sri Lanaka to wed. 'These eco attractions are becoming very popular amongst foreign tourists. The BBQ dinner with candle light in the jungle is a major attraction and regular feature, and they love it' said Ravi Gooneratne, Director-General Manager, Deer Park Hotel and The Royal Lotus Hotel, Giritale. Both hotels are owned and managed by the Jinasena Group.

These jungle eco attractions are typical jungle fiestas and popular not only among foreign tourists by Sri Lankans alike, Gooneratne said.

The Deer Park Hotel gains its name from the dry zone tropical of Sri Lanka in which is has been built. This jungle was a dedicated private hunting ground of the ancient kings of Sri Lanka. The resort follows on from this regal heritage in its ambience, style and concept. 'We believe that Deer Park is more than simply a beautiful location. It is infact surrounded by a wealth of natural resources, three natural wild life parks in which we carry out safaris by jeep and on elephant back for tourists' Gooneratne said. The jungle weddings are carried out on some of the most stunning backdrops one could imagine. The foreign couples are wed to the sounds of a dance troupe and greeted by singing flower damsels, and then led off on elephant back to a host of proceedings.

In close proximity to the hotel are ancient Archaeological ruined cities. Here tourists are taken on guided tours. Surrounding the Deer Park Hotel is a world of different culture and hospitality, trades, crafts and art to which tourists are introduced by means of visiting villages by buggy carts, by which the resort promotes rules craft and trade. The adventures are organised by the Tusker Club of the Deer Park.
