UNP will liaise with President - Moragoda

by Frances Bulathsinhala

Minister of Economic Reforms and Information Technology Milinda Moragoda, a key whip in the ongoing peace process, said yesterday that the UNP would be consistent in seeking the support of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga towards a lasting peace, the final goal of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Government and the LTTE.

"We have been very good at signing documents. Implementation is the key issue, the Minister said. He revealed that a peace secretariat will be set up in the course of next week to take the peace process forward and to create a link with the media about the developments which might take place in the future as a result of the signed MoU". He made these comments as chief guest at a European Union organized seminar for journalists on mass media and conflict resolution held in Wadduwa yesterday.

"India will be kept informed about the peace process at every step", Minister Moragoda said, adding that "Norway which played an important role as facilitator in getting the two parties agree on the MoU, was keen that India is kept informed about the process of negotiations".

The Minister said that by signing the present ceasefire agreement, the Wickremesinghe government intended to call a halt to the escalation of violence and distrust. However he said that for the security of all concerned, these initiatives would be carried out in a step by step process.

"While outside forces attempt to guarantee a co-operative approach, and warn of potential defection, both sides may be expected to act with restraint and prudence to achieve a better prospect for all. The Government certainly intends to take each agreed step watchfully, in anticipation of co-operation from the LTTE but with due prudence", the Minister said.
