Extensive consultations all round before signing - PM

It was after extensive consultations with President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers, consultations with the Maha Sangha, and a prior briefing of the heads of the national media that the Government proceeded to sign the ceasefire agreement, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told a gathering of officers and troops of the armed forces at the Trincomalee naval base last Friday evening.

The Premier recalled that on Wednesday, February 20, he had personally spoken with the Venerable Mahanayaka Theras of the various Nikayas and explained to them the significance of the Agreement.

The Prime Minister also noted that he had held numerous discussions with the President and had kept her briefed on the progress of the formulation of the Agreement. On Thursday, February 21, he had met the President and, presenting her with the finalised document, had informed her that he had learnt the LTTE Leader Velupillai Prabhakaran had endorsed the Agreement.

He further said that the Government would shortly be holding discussions with the leaders of all political parties and presenting the Agreement document in Parliament and before the public to enable an open discussion of the Agreement.
