Navam Perahera this week Colombo's biggest annual cultural pageant, the Navam Perahera, parades the streets of the city over two days this week. The colourful Perahera, which has become a major tourist attraction, will wend its way from the Gangaramaya Vihara on February 25 and 26. The Perahera celebrates Navam Poya which falls on February 27. Navam Poya commemorates the Buddha's acceptance of the Arahants Sariputta and Moggallana as his chief disciples, Gangaramaya chief incumbent the Venerable Galaboda Gnanissara told the 'Sunday Observer' last week in explaining the significance of this pageant. "The chief objective of the Perahera is to parade the sacred relic of the Buddha to bring blessings to the people and the country," the Ven. Galaboda said. The Perahera this year features more that 150 dance troupes and other performing groups. |
