Top priority for rehabilitation of Vanni convoy roads The 100-day crash programme launched by the Resettlement and Rehabilitation Authority of the North (RRAN) includes urgent repairs to the badly affected section of the convoy road form Piramanalankulam to Madhu, Madhu to Pallamadu and Pallamadu to Vellankulam, a spokesman of the RRAN told Lankapuvath. Minister of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees, Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena has stressed that convoy roads to Vanni must be repaired as a priority and the government had already made arrangements to lift the ban of essential items to Vanni. This would pave the way for the essential food and medicine reaching the people in the uncleared areas without the interruption of checking and re-checking or multiple unloading and reloading. Accordingly, the Resettlement and Rehabilitation Authority of the North has prioritized the rehabilitation of Vanni convoy roads to enable the transport of food and medicine, he said. The Minister also said that the crash program to repair convoy roads was estimated to cost Rs. 12 million and would be monitored by both Government Agents of Vavuniya and Mannar. An estimated 375,000 people would benefit from this road facility in addition, Health Department and NGO ambulances could make at least 60 trips per month. A further Rs. 13.3 million has been allocated for the construction of 200 semi-permanent houses in Jaffna, under the 100-day crash programme to settle displaced homeless families, he added. |
