Katukurunda Circuit Meet today

by LAL GUNASEKERA

The Katukurunda track comes alive today (Sunday) with the roar of cars and motor-cycles intermingled with the strong stench of oil and burning rubber when the Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders (SLARDAR) conducts the Katukurunda Circuit Meet, which is the first mass start circuit event for the year.

Incorporating an international concept, SLARDAR, has introduced a point system to select the champion racing driver and rider of the year after completing six events at various venues like Katukurunda, Fox Hill, Gajaba (Anuradhapura), Karadupona and Radella. Drivers and riders competing in a series of events will be allocated points based on their positions. The series known as the "SLARDAR Championship 2002" has for the first occasion provided the drivers and riders an opportunity to prepare well in time their vehicles, bikes and themselves to compete in a national championship.

Twenty events for cars and motor cycles have been scheduled, starting at 8.30 a.m. The top most racing drivers in Sri Lanka in the calibre of Arvinda Premadasa, Rizvi Farouk, Nalin D. The Katukurunda track itself has been improved and for the first time will run in an anti clockwise direction made to provide interesting corners on the track where the skill of competitors will be challenged to the maximum. Practices were held yesterday (Saturday).
