Opening of SLRFU new headquarters today.

The official opening of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) new headquarters at the Old Race Course by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Johnston Fernando, will take place today (Sunday) at 9 a.m. The SLRFU were first housed at the CH and FC, which was located also at the Race Course, and then to Longdon Place. Now after nearly a century (CRFU was formed in 1908) the SLRFU are moving into their own premises.

Commanders Harsha Mayadunne, President of the SLRFU, told the Sunday Observer that the grant of Sterling Pounds 75,000 to 100,000 from the International Rugby Board (IRB) too is expected at any moment with recommendations of the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU).

Sri Lanka who are to meet China on March 10 at Longdon Place in their qualifying game of the Rugby World Cup 2003 (Asian Zone) will be pitted against the Defence Services in a practise match on Tuesday at Longdon Place and that the present national pool of 35 players will continue with their training under Tony Amith upto March 1 and that the final 25-member team will be picked one week before the game with China.

Sri Lanka's second qualifying game is with Kazakhastan on April 21 to be staged in Kazakhastan. If the Lankans win both games, they are scheduled to meet Hong Kong on May 18 in Hong Kong, Taipei in Colombo on May 25. South Korea too in Colombo on June 6 and Japan again in Colombo on June 23.

Commodore Mayadunne also said that it was unlikely that foreign players will be seen in action at this year's 'A' division Caltex League tournament scheduled to kick off on May 3, but that the final decision on this matter will be taken up by the new committee after the annual general meeting of the SLRFU today (Sunday). Foreigners have been permitted to play in the Caltex 'B' and 'C' division games.

Sri Lanka will figure at the IRB World Series 7's in Hong Kong from March 22 to 24, Singapore 7's on April 20 and 21, Malaysian International 7's on April 27 and 28 and Singer/Sri Lanka International 7's of Kandy Sports Club on August 20, 31 and September 1. Besides these 7's competitions, Sri Lanka will also playing the Asian Games in South Korea from September 28 to October 14 and the Asian Championship (Asiad) at Bangkok, Thailand from November 2 to 9. The 2006 Asiad is scheduled to be staged in Colombo, while the Asiad in 2004 will be in Hong Kong.

On the local scene, the first-round of the Caltex 'A' division League Championship is from May 3 to June 30 with the second-round from July 5 to August 4. The Caltex Clifford Cup tournament is from August 14 to 24 and the President's Trophy from October 18 to 27.
