Sri Lanka in the spotlight at Belgium Tourism Fair Sri Lanka participated as a special guest in the Tourism Fair in Chaerleroi, Belgium recently. Charleroi is a principal town of the Belgian Federal Province of Wallonia, which in terms of land area occupies more than one half of Belgium and has a population of 3.3 million. Wallonia generates one per cent of total world trade, with its advanced competencies in fine technologies, such as software, computer graphics, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, new ceramic materials and petrochemical products. This being Sri Lanka's first major promotional effort in Wallonia, the Sri Lanka a Tourist Board and SriLankan Airlines worked in partnership to promote Sri Lanka as tourist destination. The Sri Lanka Pavilion featured a cultural troupe and a restaurant operated with the assistance of chefs from the Colombo Hilton Hotel. The fair attracted around 100,000 visitors, many of whom visited the Sri Lanka Pavilion. It was clear that the fair had contributed to increasing the awareness of Sri Lanka in Wallonia. While the immediate benefit of this awareness would be an increase in the tourist arrivals from this part of Belgium to Sri Lanka, it is envisaged that contacts in the tourism sector could progressively be broadened to encompass other sectors, such as trade and investment. It is expected that consultations will shortly be held by Sri Lanka with the concerned authorities in the government of the Province of Wallonia towards this end. |
