Emirates revises flight numbers

Emirates has revised its flight numbers worldwide with effect from this month to allow for growth of the network and to reflect geographical areas.

The Dubai-based international airline said it had divided its network into nine geographical areas and assigned a range of numbers for each, with the series identifying the geographical region of the final destination.

Emirates flights from Dubai to Colombo, previously EK 800 and EK 814, would now be EK 550 and EK 554 respectively, with flight numbers EK 500 to EK 699 being allocated to the South Asian subcontinent. Similarly, flights from Dubai to Singapore and Jakarta via Colombo, earlier EK 076 are now EK 344, following the allocation of numbers EK 330 to 399 to South East Asia.

The Emirates network now comprises 58 destinations in 41 countries. A major development for the carrier would be the launch of services to the USA in mid-2003 and subsequently to South America. The airline has allocated flight numbers EK 201 to EK 299 for flights to the Americas in anticipation of the development of this market.

The airline also plans to double its daily service between Frankfurt and Dubai later this year. Emirates Chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum has told the International Tourism-Borse in Berlin that four new non-stop flights a week will start on August 1 and three more at the beginning of October.

Emirates also launched new routes to Casablanca and Khartoum and plans to launch services to Perth and Osaka.
