Jaffna now, hive of activity

by P. Krishnasamy

Jaffna is a bustling town now with an average of 5,000 people visiting there daily from the outlying Southern, Vanni and Eatern areas, besides convoys taking essential goods, without restrictions, on the A9 highway. Most of these travellers are displaced Tamils and Muslims, who are keen to see the condition of their long abandoned house and property, Southern pilgrims to Buddhist shrines, tourists and traders dealing in tobacco, palmyrah and other agricultural produce and sea foods, according to reports from sources there.

About 150 private coaches with a full complement of passengers, vans and lorries are plying five days a week and, this number, is bound to increase after the commencement of commercial transport services by the SLTB and private bus owners on which discussions are now under way.

Earlier, lorries with consignments of goods from Vavuniya were not allowed to proceed to Jaffna across the Omanthai checkpoint. The goods were unloaded there and transported in other lorries from Vanni. This restriction has been removed as from last Tuesday and the lorries are now allowed to travel to Jaffna without being subjected to unloading at Omanthai, according to authorities of the Vavuniya government secretariat.

Jaffna farmers who earlier experienced difficulties in marketing their agricultural produce now have a ready market from the Southern traders approaching them direct for purchases. Consequently, there is a big demand for their palmyrah and agricultural produce and sea foods.
