190 soldiers suddenly taken ill

by Ananth Palakidnar

About 190 soldiers attached to the Vavuniya main camp were suddenly taken ill, following the night meal they have had on Friday.

Military spokesman Brigadier Sanath Karunaratne told the 'Sunday Observer' that one of the soldiers was complaining of an abdominal disorder after he had his dinner on Friday. Thereafter several other soldiers also suffered a similar disorder and they were rushed to the Vavuniya hospital.

"This sort of illness among soldiers is quite common, but with 190 soldiers being affected at the same time, it is something strange", Brigadier Karunaratne said. He said that 15 soldiers are being treated at the Vavuniya General hospital and ten others transferred to the Anuradhapura hospital.

"The situation is now under control and the affected soldiers are now out of danger. Investigations are being conducted to ascertain the cause for this sudden sickness" Brig. Karunaratne said.

The Army Commander Lt. Gen. Lionel Balagalle has immediately sent Maj. Gen Dr. Dudley Perera, the head of the Army medical corps, and Brigadier Krishnaratne to Vavuniya to treat the soldiers and assist in the investigations, the military spokesman said.
