'Peace for Children' gains momentum

The 'Peace for Children' project spearheaded by Christine Anderson and Nihara Jayatilleke Rutnam is gaining momentum with many sponsors and well-wishers sending donations and goods. "A German woman who has visited the island to help with children's charities, made a substantial donation towards the project," enthused Nihara.

"The project was started in a low key as we wished to target certain companies for specific goods for our projects first, before we asked the general public to join it. We will make up any shortfalls, such as recreation and sports equipment with the donations received. The next goal for the girls is to start training horses at Mount Lavinia Hotel's private beach area, in the mornings and evenings.

"The hotel has kindly allowed the horses to be stabled there. Already 4 horses have been generously given by Dr. Noohu of Jewel Teck, Mr. Nigel Austin of N/E fame and Nalin Rajapakse. All food and water for the horses are supplied by Prima Ceylon Foods.

"A friend of ours paid for the building and rental of the stables but he wished to remain anonymous," said Christine. "There are a number of people who do not want any publicity but just want to help us because they believe in what we are trying to do", she said.

Ceylon Biscuits, the Training Partnership, Nestle, GE Engineering, Lipton Tea, Uswatte Confectionaries, Mc Laren Holdings, Quenby Lanka, KMTM are some of the sponsors who have confirmed the items they will be donating.

Christine and Nihara were both touched by the immediate and overwhelming response from the Lyceum International School in Nugegoda.
