Popularising jack-based food by Deepal Warnakulasuriya Giving importance to national food production and tree planting through out the country, Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited will assist to successfully carry out this project. The main objective of the project is to popularise jack fruit based products which is now being neglected. ANCL will work in collaboration with relevant ministries, NGOs and Government organisations to make the project a success. ANCL Director Editorial and the Director of the project Bandula Padmakumara at the preliminary discussion held at ANCL premises said that the project would be launched on June 11, in memory of Arthur V. Dias (pronounced as Diyes), who pioneered the "Plant a jack tree for food in Sri Lanka' long years ago. The project will also focus on educating the public for the need to cultivate plots of land to meet any possible food scarcity challenges the country would face in the future. A Committee will be set up to handle the project. The committee will comprise Lake House employees and personnel from the Environment and Natural Resources Ministry, Agriculture and Samurdhi Ministry, Canadian Development Fund and several government and non-governmental organisations. The Project Director, Mr Padmakumara said that the project would benefit low income families and people islandwide while the project is activated for a period of five years. Nanda Dias (son of Arthur V. Diyes), actress Malini Fonseka, ANCL Managing Director Sepala Perera, Silumina Editor Thilakarathna Kuruwita Bandara, ANCL Editorial Group Head Sarath Amarakoon and several prominent personalities in food production were also present. |
