Minister reviews rockets deal

Details of the controversial Rs. 600 million rockets deal are being critically examined on the instructions of Defence Minister, Tilak Marapana, the Sunday Observer learns. This inquiry will accertain the truth of the allegations about this recent purchase by the Army.

Meanwhile, Army officials are learnt to have rejected the allegations in a statement made to another newspaper last week. No statement however, has been sent to the Sunday Observer, which last Sunday prominently reported the arms deal probe.

Remembering R. Premadasa

The 9th death anniversary of former President R.Premadasa will be held at the National Art Gallery, Colombo, on April 29 and 30.

Mrs Hema Premadasa with the Sri Sucharitha Movement have organised the commemoration ceremony, at which a stamp of the late R. Premadasa will be issued. A photo exhibition depicting different stages of his life and a film on some of his important political events will also take place.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe including all cabinet ministers of the government are expected to grace the occasion.

Jobs for 140 grads

Forty graduates from the Moratuwa University engineering faculty have been employed at the National Water Supply Board, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Moratuwa University, Prof. Malik Ranasinghe told the 'Sunday Observer'.

Meanwhile, another batch of hundred civil engineering graduates have also been recruited by the state corporations recently, according to the sources.

US warship in Colombo

The powerful United States guided missile destroyer USS Hopper touches Colombo this week in the first such visit by a major US naval unit in eight years. The guided missile destroyer is one of the more powerful vessels in the US Navy and the USS Hopper is on its way to join the American forces in the Indian Ocean now in operation as part of the US military intervention in Afghanistan.

An Embassy communique said that the vessel visits Colombo on Tuesday, April 30, for a ten-hour refuelling stop.
