Sports Minister Fernando comes to Kandy Youth SC rescue

by S.M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Correspondent

Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Johnston Fernando came to the rescue of Kandy Youths Sports Club by making available the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy for practices at a very concessionary rate after considering an appeal by the club who will be participating in the SLRFU "A" division rugby tournament for the second year in succession.

The President of the Kandy Youths Sports Club, Janaka Pathirana told the Sunday Observer that the club has still not found a suitable sponsor to go through the season but sports benefactor and Chairman of the UNP, Malik Samarawickrema has promised all assistance including finding a sponsor. He thanked Malik Samarawickrema for coming to the rescue of the club on many occasions in the past.

When Kandy Youths commenced practices they found that the standard rates charged by the Bogambara Stadium inclusive of taxes was prohibitive and they could ill afford it. Thus they had no place to practice as the two other rugby grounds owned by the institution were required for their own purposes.

The President of Kandy Youths SC next made an appeal to the Minister of Sports, Johnston Fernando to consider a reduction of the ground fee for practices and they permitted to pay the same fee as last year. The Sports Minister after considering their appeal instructed the Bogambara Stadium authorities immediately to allow the use of the grounds at a very concessionary rate which will be just around one fourth of the normal rate.

Janaka Pathirana thanked the Minister of Sports for his fine gesture which will help them to continue their rugby at top level as otherwise they would have been in a difficult situation with the rugby season just around the corner.

It must be recalled that Kandy Youths stormed into the rugby arena last season when they scored a stunning win over CR and FC at Longden Place and thereafter have had a reasonable amount of success in league tournament and also played in the knock-out tournament including the under-21 tournament.
