Arpico stickers head "B" Division table

by Pelham Juriansz

At the end of the third week of matches Arpico is heading the "B" division table in the Mercantile hockey tournaments. Meanwhile, Sampath Bank scored two wins, both against Janashakthi, and Airport & Aviation with a victory against Sri Lankan Airlines in their league games played for the M and E trophy at the Malay Padang recently.

In the first game, Seylan Bank stickers edged out Janashakthi, skippered by Dyand de Rosayro, by a solitary goal to nil.

The game began with the coach of Sampath Bank and the third umpire officiating. The two umpires who were scheduled to blow for the game took a day "off" and it was left to the coach of the Sampath Bank team Suresh Kumar and third umpire G.H. Rupasinghe to fill in and retrieve the situation. Mercantile H.A. President, Dennis De Rosayro took over duties as the third umpire.

Despite numerous attempts at goal by the Sampath Bank stickers in the first half there was no scoring because of an ever alert Janashakthi goal keeper. The first half ended scoreless.

In the dying minutes of the game Sampath Bank scored through Lakmina Gunaratne to enable the Bankers secure a 1 nil victory.

In the second game Janashakthi, facing a much stiffer opposition from the plundering Airport & Aviation players, suffered a 3-nil defeat, with S.M. Krishnakumar and M. Weerasinghe (2) scoring for the winners.

Airport and Aviation drew first blood when in the 12th minute S.M. Krishnakumar shot across to sound the boards and put them in the lead. In the 29th minute M. Weerasinghe increased the lead for A & A when he beat the goal keeper all ends up.

Further salt was rubbed into the Janashakthi wounds when Weerasinghe scored yet again in the 44th minute to put the game beyond Janashakthi and give Airport and Aviation a resounding victory.

The third encounter between Sri Lankan Airlines and Sampath Bank was a ding dong battle for supremacy with Sampath Bank gaining the upper hand in the first half through a solitary goal from Lakmina Gunaratne in the 10th minute. Sampath held onto this slender lead till the short whistle.

In the second half centre forward Lakmina Gunaratne again received a slick pass from Gihan Perera to score and give Sampath Bank a sound 2-nil lead.

Not to be deterred, Roshan Karunaratne of Sri Lankan Airlines in a last minute "do or die" effort sounded the boards in the 45th minute, but it was a case of "too little too late" as Sampath Bank emerged worthy winners.

Umpires - L. Ittapana and M.B. Herath.
