Union Assurance beat defending champs HNB by 2 wkts

Macbroc Teas scored a thrilling victory in the over bowled by the wicket-keepers in their pre-quarter-final game with Singer (Sri Lanka) Limited on the D. S. Senanayake College Grounds at the Mercantile Cricket Association's Six-a-Side Championship yesterday. This is being sponsored by Union Assurance Limited.

The scores were 'tied' at the end of the five overs - Macbroc Teas, making 58 for 1 to Singer's 58 for 4. Then when the "keepers" sent down their vital over, Singer made 11 runs but Macbroc got the required 12 runs in three balls. Another feature on this ground was Indika de Saram's 62 for Access International with seven sixes and three fours against Sri Lankan Airlines.

On the Wesley College Grounds at Campbell Park there were two close wins - Nawaloka beating Slimline by 4 runs and East West Marketing beating Merchant Credit by 7 runs after the latter had two wins over Pan-Asia Bank and John Keells. The best performance on this ground was Nalaka de Silva's unbeaten 50 with six boundaries and two sixes for East West vs Merchant Credit.

Then on the MCA Grounds, David Peiris Motor Company had the satisfaction of beating the 1999 champions Bartleets by 28 runs in the pre "quarters" while Union Assurance scored an upset 2-wicket win over the defending champions Hatton National Bank also in the pre "quarters". The highest total was recorded by Hatton National Bank (108 for 1) against Akbar Brothers. The best performances on this ground was by Piyal Salgado of David Peiris Motor Company who made 51 with three sixes against Bartleets. In the bowling department Nilantha Cooray of Bartleets claimed three wickets in one over against Singer Industries, while Ranga Herath of Sampath Bank took 3 for 3 against HVA Lanka.

The quarter-final line-up starting today (Sunday) from 9.00 a.m. only at the MCA Grounds is as follows: Union Assurance vs David Peiris Motor Company, Sampath Bank vs Access International, Janashakthi Insurance vs Macbroc Teas and Nawaloka vs East West Marketing. The semi-finals are scheduled for 1.00 p.m, Plate final at 2.30 p.m. and final at 4.00 p.m.

Six sides made their debut. They were Sri Lankan Catering Services, Bartleet Group, Rogers Group, Swarnakelum Group, Data Entry International and Slimline.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Union Assurance Limited, Sarath Wickremanayake will be the chief guest today.
