Fighting erupts in eastern Afghanistan-report ISLAMABAD, April 27 (Reuters) - Fierce fighting broke out between the forces of rival Afghan commanders for the control of the eastern Afghan city of Gardez, killing four people, a Pakistan-based private news agency reported on Saturday. Quoting unspecified sources, Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) said forces loyal to former provincial governor Padshah Khan Zadran launched an attack at midnight on Friday on forces loyal to the interim government. In late January, around 50 fighters were killed when the two sides fought for two days in the ancient city of Gardez. The interim government later replaced Zadran as governor. AIP said both sides used cannons and rockets in the fighting. "Several rockets hit the city's jail and other areas," the report quoted witnesses from Gardez as saying, adding four people were killed and nine wounded in the fighting. |
