Ugandan delegation visits Tri Star

A high-powered ministerial delegation from the Republic of Uganda visited Sri Lanka recently on the invitation of the Chairman of the Tri Star Group Kumar Dewapura.

The eight-member delegation was led by Uganda's Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development Gerald Sendawula and was accompanied by Dr. Anton Balasuriya, a Sri Lankan based in Uganda, who is working with USAID, heading the export competitiveness project named COMPETE in Uganda.

The visit of the delegation is the result of a visit made to Uganda by Dewapura in mid-February where he was invited to present a special paper on the development of the apparel industry at a special confab sponsored by Ugandan Investment Authority and USAID in Uganda on 'Poverty Alleviation through Export Competitiveness.'

He told the confab that Uganda, which enjoyed not only quota-free, but also duty-free exports to US markets, would benefit greatly if it invited investors with an attractive package.

Uganda's three main export commodities are coffee, cotton and fish. Of late it had shown a keen interest in development of the apparel industry as a means of giving more employment opportunities to the poor sections of its society through export-oriented industries.

Following Mr. Dewapura's presentation, the Ugandan authorities had expressed a willingness to come to Sri Lanka and see Tri Star's production plants.

The delegates visited several factories of Tri Star Group at Ratmalana where garments for Marks and Spencer are under production as well as several other factories in the country.
