Charity horseback ride begins today

Christine Anderson and Nihara Jayatilleke Rutnam, the two women who are embarking on a 'Peace for Children', a charity horseback ride to Jaffna, will begin their journey with a preliminary trot through Colombo today.

The ride, scheduled to begin at 5.00 pm from the Independence Square, will take them through to Galle Face Green via a circuitous route that will cover many parts of the city. Both riders seek to secure public participation for the project through contributions and donations. "We invite everyone to come and join us to support the underprivileged children affected by the conflicts in the northern regions," they said.

All those interested in contributing towards the 'Peace for Children' should hand over their donations to the riders at Galle Face. A 'Hope Counter' is also being set up at Odel (Union Place) to help facilitate the donations. The counter will be open on Monday and Tuesday.

Christine and Nihara, earlier visited the Vanni region to identify the needs of the women and children, and have adopted the Children's Ward at Vavuniya Hospital, an IDP camp in Poonthottam, Vavuniya and a number of schools in Manukulam, Velanai, and Delft in Jaffna as part of their project. The two women will be collecting children's clothing (used or new), shoes (used or new), stationery items, sporting equipment, note books, food items including tea, biscuits, sugar and milk powder and other items that will be of use to children.

The two women will begin their peace mission to Jaffna on May 11.
