Guys Mercy Mission gives a new lease of life to Sri Lankan children Mercy Mission is a project under which a team of cardiac paediatric medical experts from Guys Hospital London who are here to perform heart surgery on children. At the close of session on April 25, 13 fortunate children from a list of more than 400 patients put forward by the Lady Ridgeway and Colombo National Hospital had life saving operation in a release. The team is lead by Conal Austin and managed by Jai Lameer who has been instrumental in organising the project. Lameer was supported by a group of concerned citizens including his wife Jayanthi and Friends Ananda Thevathasan and Harish Nilaweera. Funds for this project were collected from family, friends and sponsors in Sri Lanka and the UK it stated. The aim of the mission was to perform operations, conducted lectures and provide training at Guys Hospital in London on a regular basis. The success of the operation has been the integrated performance of each member resulting in confirming the capability and output of the team. Guys Hospital is in an enviable position as being one of the founder hospitals and medical schools in the United Kingdom. Cardiac surgery has always enjoyed an excellent reputation at Guys Hospital. It is now united with St. Thomas' Hospital and is the largest cardiothoracic surgical department in the UK. Within the department the paediatric cardiac surgical team comprises David Anderson and Conal Austin. The consultant body is fully supported by a full teaching complement of surgical trainees, overseas fellows and trainee cardiologists. There is a highly trained nursing body who works in the wards, theatres,intensive care and cardiac echo department it further stated. |
