Chemists pass out from private college

For the first time 48 graduate chemists have passed out from the College of Chemical Sciences, Colombo.

The Dean of the College of Chemical Sciences, Prof. J.N.O. Fernando, said that this number represented the largest annual source of graduate chemists from any institution in Sri Lanka. He also said that the degree is equivalent to that of a B.Sc. special degree in Chemistry from a recognised university.

Since 1978, around 79 professional graduateship courses and examinations in Chemistry have been conducted by the Sri Lanka Chartered Chemists, which is the professional body of conducting examinations in Sri Lanka.

According to the College of Chemical Sciences, the College has made a tremendous progress in producing over 300 graduate chemists over the past few years and it is of educational significance to note that the 48 graduate chemists who have passed the relevant examinations last year represent double the number ever produced by any other institution in Sri Lanka.

Prof. Fernando also pointed out that the successful graduateship program of the Institution of Chemistry, Ceylon represented the unique and important role that a professional body outside the state sector could play in furthering tertiary level education despite having less resources and without adequate funding from the government. He said that those who got through relevant examinations in the past were able to secure suitable employment both in the public and private sectors and a large number of graduates were able to obtain Masters' degrees and Doctorates from local and foreign universities.

The next intake of students by the College of Chemical Sciences will commence in October 2002 and students possessing GCE A/L pass in chemistry and 2 other subjects or equivalent qualifications are advised to apply to the Registrar, College of Chemical Sciences, 120/10, Vidya Mawatha, Colombo.
