Ex-Indian PM hails peace process by HANA IBRAHIM Inder Kumar Gujral, the former Prime Minister of India, welcomed the ongoing peace initiative between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE and said that if peace was restored to Sri Lanka, it would give a great deal of satisfaction to India. But he emphasised that peace should be achieved to the satisfaction of every Sri Lankan, irrespective of religion or ethnicity. While in Sri Lanka for a two-day 'South Asians for Human Rights' conference, the former Prime Minister, one of India's most successful Foreign Ministers, said that India was positive about the peace process. "We wish for it to succeed," and said that India would like Sri Lanka to prosper as a united state and become a vibrant member of the South Asian Community." Refusing to comment on anything that would affect the peace process, the former Prime Minister said that India was very gratified to see the beginning of the peace process, and that peace would further strengthen democracy in Sri Lanka. |
