Meanwhile, R.A. Anura Rohana and Lalith Kumara, have been picked to play in the Malaysian Amateur title, which is yet another stroke-play event, on May 16, 17, 18 and 19.

Rohana finished 16th out of 142 amateurs from 26 countries at the Malaysian Amateur Championships last year (2001) although firing 14 birdies in his four rounds (72, 69, 76, 75). He has already won two national titles this year (Bangladesh and Pakistan), and confident of doing well in Kuala Lumpur this year.

The President of the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU), Shrian de Soysa, told the 'Sunday Observer' that a team of four will represent the country at the Asian Games in Pusan, South Korea in September-October where Anura Rohana and Lalith Kumara are certain of berths. Sri Lanka's Tissa Chandradasa, who is ranked No. 1 in Dubai, Untied Arab Emirates (UAE), has been asked by the SLGU to be available for the Asian Games.

De Soysa further said that the Sri Lanka Amateur Championships to be worked off at the RCGC has been re-scheduled for August 31 to September 7 due to the ICC Trophy Cricket Tournament being staged in Sri Lanka in September. He said: "India, Pakistan and Bangladesh will send four players each while Nepal is almost certain of sending two." SLGU will also invite Malaysia, Dubai and South Africa too to send two players each.

He also said that the SLGU will revive the Sri Lanka Open Championships to be staged in July at the RCGC and are looking out for sponsors. A former top professional and Sri Lanka amateur champion, K.A. Nandasena Perera too will vie for this title. This will be a stroke-play event over four rounds.

De Soysa also disclosed that the SLGU has identified a pro pool of about 20 players and hopes to get them invited of some top professional tournaments including the Indian Pro Circuit to give them also an opportunity of displaying their skills. He said that these pro's are mainly from the RCGC as Nuwara Eliya has not yet responded to required standards and one player from Victoria Golf Club in Digana. There will be a tournament for the pro's in Nuwara Eliya at the end of this month.
