Old Vidyarthians win cricket sixes

by S.M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Correspondent

Old Vidyarthians put up a dassling display to beat Old Trinitians Sports Club 'Blues' by 24 runs in the finals to become champions at the Open Inter-Club Six-a-side Cricket Tournament organised by Saracens Cricket Club, Kandy in connection with their 15th anniversary celebrations and sponsored by Readywear Garment Ltd. and played at Police Grounds, Kandy.

Rain which affected play in the first day resulted in the organisers playing a fresh tournament on the second day and the innings being reduced to 4 overs to complete the tournament which was a success and many felt that it should be an annual event.

The finals between Old Trinitian SC 'Blues' and Old Vidyarthians CC turned out to be a thriller. Vidyarthians batting first ran up a match winning total of 73 for 1 in 5 overs with Sarath Ranaweera scoring 28 not out and Chaminda Kodikara 21. Vidyartha schoolboy Kosala Kulasekera scored 13 including 10 runs off a single delivery from Sri Lanka cricketer Kaushalya Weeraratne. A no ball from Kaushalya Weeraratne was hooked for six by Kosala Kulasekera to the square-leg. The penalty for no ball is four runs and with the six scored added up to tens in a single delivery.

When the Old Trinitians batted, they were off to a good start with Randil Gamage in a pulverising mood hitting four sixes off consecutive balls in the first over which realised 25 runs. But thereafter the Old Vidyarthians applied the brake through bowlers Sarath Ranaweera and Sujith Perera as the Old Trinitians folded up for 49.

Mr. Sinnasamy Muthiah, Managing Director Luckyland Biscuits Company Limited and father of Sri Lanka off spinner Muthia Muralitharan was the chief guest and distributed the main awards along with the guests of honour SSP Kandy Asoka Ratnaweera and A.S. Ekanayake.

Man-of-the-Final: Chaminda Kodikara (Old Vidyathian CC).

Best Batsman: Kaushalya Weeraratne (Old Trinitians SC 'Blues').

Special Award: M. Fasli (Chairman CC).
