Browns sponsor CH rugby

by LAL GUNESEKERA

We found that there was a lot of enthusiasm and following for rugby not only in Colombo, but also in Galle, Kurunegala and certain other areas. We hope the sport will spread to other parts of the country too. This was stated by the Managing Director of Brown and Company Limited, Monty Candappa, at a media briefing held to announce Sharp as the main sponsors of CH & FC rugby team this year.

Candappa said that 'his team' decided to sponsor CH as it was a club that is doing well and also taking into consideration CH signing on New Zealander Matt Lee who is an IRB qualified coach, who will be coaching CH for the next three years. He said that this was the first time they (Browns) are moving into the rugby arena, but have sponsored cricket earlier (Exide Trophy) and presently sponsor the Sharp FA Cup, for the next three years.

Kitto Dias, President CH & FC, thanked Monty Candappa and his 'team' at Browns for the sponsorship package this year, and hoped that they (Browns) will continue with the sponsorship in the future too. However, Dias said that CH team should give off their best and fulfil the hopes and aspirations of Browns and win all trophies on offer.

Speaking of CH's junior rugby program under Matt Lee for the next three years, it has been decided to form a junior squad in the under-11 and under-13 age groups with the future in mind. These youngsters (even girls could join in) will play mini rugby games prior to the main 'A' division games at Maitland Crescent this year, and the club hopes to arrange this sort of fixtures against CR & FC, Kandy SC and Galle RFC etc.

Among the others who were present at the press briefing were: Lasantha Perera (Marketing Director of Browns), Romesh Fernando (Secretary of Gymkhana Club), Chandrashan Perera (CH & FC) and Ranjan Canagasabai (Chairman of CH's Rugby Section).
