Crucial final day for Sri Lanka at World Junior Tennis C'ships

by LAL GUNESEKERA

Sri Lanka's hopes of entering the final round of the World Junior (under-14) Boy's Tennis Championship to be staged in the Czech Republic from August 12 to 17, will depend entirely on the singles match between Franklyn Emmanual vs Australia's Todd Lea which was stopped in the third set with the latter leading 4-3 due to rain at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath yesterday. Emmanual won the first set 6-4, while Lee won the second 6-3. The doubles match will also have a impact on the final outcome.

In the earlier singles, Australia's Stephen Potakis beat Sri Lanka's N. S. Nishendran in a three setter (2-6, 7-5, 6-4) and the decider will be clinched today in the morning in the continuation of the other singles and the doubles where Sri Lanka's pair will be Nishendran and Emmanual. Australia are seeded No. 3 and Sri Lanka No. 6.

Earlier in the morning, Sri Lanka, sealed their victory against Japan to earn the top slot in Group III. On Friday, Emmanual won his singles for Sri Lanka beating Japan's Fumiaki Kita in three sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-4), while Kazuyo Ono beat Nishendran also in a three setter (4-6, 6-3, 6-4). Then in the crucial doubles, Sri Lanka's Emmanual and Nishendran won the final set in a tie breaker (7-6) after being one set all on Friday. Japan were seeded No. 4.

Already, India (seed No. 5) and China (seed No. 2) have entered the final round, while the other two slots will be between the winners of the Australia vs Sri Lanka match and the South Korea vs Thailand match which will be continued today.

Other matches to be continued today (which is the final day) is between India vs Japan (India leading 2-0), while China beat Hong Kong 2-0.
