Chicken on wheels

by Elmo Leonard

Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) has now taken to wheels, with the commissioning of a mobile restaurant in the form of a double- decker bus last week.

KFC, which started operations in Sri Lanka in 1996, also opened its fourth outlet in Kandy last week. Its operations started at Majestic City, Colombo 4, and then moved to Access Tower, Colombo 2, Ja-Ela, and now, Kandy.

The mobile restaurant is a double-decker bus, which the Ceylon Transport Board had purchased from London Transport.

The bus was purchased from a collector for Rs 1 million by Cargills Food Services (Pvt) Ltd., the local franchise holder for KFC. Another Rs 3 million was spent on a high-tech kitchen in the lower deck while the upper deck is converted to a sit-down restaurant.

"You can party while the bus goes round the City of Colombo," Cargills Deputy Chairman Ranjith Page told the media. "The bus is for hire, to your home or office, for a minimum of 24 guests. Food served would conform to the KFC menu," he said.

The Chicken on Wheels bus can also be hired for children's parties. The services provided include invitations, food, decor, games, face painting, and a music system. A DJ could be hired on request. Two clowns are part of the team.

The KFC venture had incurred a loss of Rs 10 million since inception, and broke even last year, Page said.
