Voices in Harmony

Bishop Marius Pieris chief guest on the first day’s performance being welcomed by Rev. Sr. Canice Principal of HFC and Rev. Sr. Amelia, Mother Superior and Patroness of HFC.

The 100 Voices in Harmony was a ticket to the world of nostalgia. Presented by the Past Pupils Association of Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya together with pianist Soundarie David, the concert was a fitting tribute to the centenary celebrations of the Convent.

The music stage brought together past and present pupils of Holy Family Convent as well as the versatile singers from the Peterite Chorale, the brother school.

A lot of hard and dedicated work on the part of Soundarie David paid off amply. In an era of pop and rap she undoubtedly inspired the present pupils of the Convent to give of their best to songs from manuscripts of yesteryear.

(From right): Rev. Fr. Felician, Rector, St. Peter’s College, Rev. Sr. Canice, Principal, Upper School, Holy Family Convent Bambalapitiya, Ms. Santhoshi Herat Watapuluwa, President of the Past Pupils’ Association, H.L. de Silva PC and Ms. Manel de Silva who were the chief guests on the second day’s performance.

One that deserves special mention is Rhythm of Life from 'Sweet Charity which Sammy Davis Jnr immortalised.

The senior school choir sang the song with laudable gusto and timing which deserved a recording of the performance. The other songs, by this choir the 'Lord's Prayer', 'Yesterday Once More' the carpenter's favourite, and the standard I got rhythm were treats in arrangement and harmony. The Primary School choir shone in their own limelight with a colourful interpretation of 'Any Dream Will Do' and 'I'd like to teach the world to sing'. In the latter song they joined the past pupils choir.

The past pupils', choir too excelled with many solo attractions.

The concert opener 'Ode to Joy', 'Sound of silence' 'Can't Help Loving that Man' and the Abba favourite 'Thank you for the music' demonstrated the versatility of members singing in harmony and not drowning each other.

Radha de Mel with her surprise solo act 'Cabaret' was stunning. She went through the song with the right amount of emotion and flippancy which won her a show stopper applause.

The Peterite Chorale under the direction of Stefan Corera excelled in their performances of the 'Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves' their acapella songs which included 'All For Love', 'In the still of the night', 'Mr. Sandman' and 'Moonlight Bay' and of course in the finale the Hallelujah Chorus.
