Teachers guilty of poor attendance

by ANJANA GAMAGE

"There are several complaints from school principals of malfunctioning of the education system in schools due to non- attendance of teachers and it has been revealed that of the teacher services in the country, twenty per cent of teachers are not attending schools daily" , Minister of Human Resources, Education and Cultural Affairs Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku said.

He was addressing the gathering at the Presbyterian Girls' School, Dehiwala recently. "Taking leave is one of the rights of teachers but they must think of the future generation of the country.

Each year at the end of term, teachers get three comprehensive holidays as well. Therefore I would like to ask them to cut down their leave for the benefit of the children of the country, he said.

The government will provide benefits to teachers serving in distant areas. Under the new scheme, they will receive two increments per year while points for foreign scholarship have increased upto 40. Already a batch of 500 teachers have attended seminars in the U.K., Malaysia, Israel, Korea and Canada and another batch of 500 teachers will be granted scholarships before the end of this year, the minister said.
