Alternative quarters for retired estate staff by P. KRISHNASAMY Estate clerical employees and other staff occupying quarters will be provided with alternative accommodation on the same estates on retirement on a proposal of the Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC) now before the Minister of Plantation Industries, Laxman Kiriella. Hitherto estate staff and other employees occupying quarters during their period of employment had to vacate their premises on retirement and find alternative places of their own outside the estate. Legal action was taken under the Estate Land Acquisition Act against those who failed to do so. CWC parliamentarian R. Yogarajan told the "Sunday Observer" that Minister Laxman Kiriella had agreed to immediately implement the new scheme proposed by the CWC. Under this scheme, the Plantation Industries Ministry will acquire homestead lands from the estate management for house construction for distribution among the staff on a reasonable payment basis on their retirement. Minister and CWC Vice President Muthu Sivalingam and Mr. Yogarajan met Minister Laxman Kiriella at the parliamentary complex last Thursday in this connection. The Plantation Industries Minister has already directed his ministry officials to get cracking on the matter, Mr. Yogarajan said. Legal action pending against retired staff who had not vacated the quarters will be withdrawn, he said. |
