Kandy results better than Colombo by Anjana Gamage Out of 210,138 candidates appeared for the GCE A\L examination in April 2002, 92,226 (43.8%) candidates have qualified for university admission, 'Sunday Observer' learns 81,554 school candidates and 10,672 private candidates. According to details released by the Department of Examinations, there has been a decline in number of 3 As this year. In 2001, 1976 candidates obtained 3 As but this year to 1927. Two girls from Mahamaya Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy have scored the highest marks in bio-science and commerce streams respectively. Sonali Sihindi Chapa Gunatilake (Bio) obtained a z-score of 2.7955 and Prashani Chamalika Illangasekera (Commerce) a z-score of 2.3886. Meanwhile, Vethalingam Janarthanan of Hindu College, Colombo scored the highest in the Physical Science stream with a z-score of 2.9176. Kamalika Malwatte of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo, topped the Arts stream with a z-score of 2.6324. A district wise breakdown of Colombo schools have got 54 - 3 As and school-wise (more than 5% of the number who sat). There were 550 candidates in Colombo who had obtained 3 As. In Galle, schools with 3 As and 186 candidates with 3 As. In Kandy, 37 schools with 3 As and 157 candidates with 3 As and 30 schools in Matara district with 3 As and 128 candidates with 3 As. Islandwide 483 schools have produced 3 As. According to University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof. B.R.R.N. Mendis, both batches of A/L 2001 and 2002 will get the opportunity to enter universities this year, except in the Arts faculties in Colombo and Kandy. |
