IT 'Guru' predicts..... : Lanka another Singapore in near future

Sri Lanka will be another Singapore, in South Asia, in the near future due to people's enthusiasm, aspirations, dedication and an urgency to get things moving faster", Chairman, Infosys Technologies Ltd N. R. Narayana Murthy, said.

India's IT guru widely known as Asia's Bill Gates Murthy said that he has no doubt about his prediction due to faster decision making, better relationships and most of all the enthusiasm of the people. He said that even India could learn lesson of faster decision making and to cultivate better relationships among people from Sri Lanka. Murthy said that he is very excited about prospects in Sri Lanka, despite his visits to over 100 countries.

Murthy delivering the keynote address at the 14th anniversary convention of the Association of Professional Bankers said that globally, banks have been reshaped by mergers and acquisitions. Competition among banks attract customers to the bank which provides the best solution. The customers of today have challenged the banks to be innovative. The road ahead for success for banks are a well defined and articulated strategy and adding value to the customer, and they are committed to Sri Lanka and added that their products are sold in Sri Lanka through Millennium Information Technologies. He said that he was impressed with the advanced technology they are doing.

He said that in the future, market will pay more leverage on technology as IT is all about reduced costs, increased productivity and more comforts for the people and most of all, IT is needed by the poor as it is a great leveller while it also increases the confidence of the poor.

Technology is important and it is an enabler but not a panacea said Murthy.

Established in 1981, Infosys is a world leader on consult and information technology services and partners with global 2000 companies to provide business consulting, systems integration, application development and product engineering services. At present Infosys employs 10,000 people in over 30 offices worldwide. Murthy has served as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Infosys since 1981, when he founded the company with six software professionals. He also served as Managing Director of Infosys until February 1999. While at Infosys, from 1992 to 1994, he served as the President of NASSCOM.

He was also been a member of the National Information Technology Task Force of India and a member of the Prime Minister's Council on Trade and Industry. He is a Director of the Board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He has received several honours and awards, including Businessman of the Year 1999 by Business India and has been featured in Asiaweek's Power 50, a list of Asia's most powerful people. He is a Fellow of the All India Management Association (AIMA) and the Computer Society of India (CSI). He received a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Mysore and a Masters Degree in Technology from IIT, Kanpur, in Uttar Pradesh, India.
