Swimmers off to China today by Leslie Fernando Eight swimmers, four girls and four boys, will swim at the Asian Age Group Swimming and Diving Championships to be held in Zuhau City of China from August 21 to 24. The team together with three officials will leave today (Sunday). It is somewhat unfortunate that Harini Jayasekera of Visakha Vidyalaya, Sri Lanka's ace woman diver, will not be going to China. Harini reached the qualifying points in both the spring board and platform diving events at the National Championships and the trials. According to Rifdy Fahmy, Secretary NAASU, Harini is over aged to compete in the Group 'A' section which is under 19. The organisers had changed the age rule. Earlier open diving category was also included in the diving program. There is no diving open this year. All eight swimmers reached the qualifying time set by National Amateur Aquatic Sports Union of Sri Lanka (NAASU). Raghvan Madawala (S. Thomas' College Mt. Lavinia), Dharsaks Tennakoon (Ananda College), T.K.A.S. Weerakkody (Sri Devananda College Ambalangoda), Kalyan Veera (St. Thomas College Kotte), Menaka de Silva (St. Bridget's Convent), Uma Kavya Dharmadasa (Musaeus College), Mihiri Kandanarachchi (Mahamaya College Kandy), Chathur Abeykoon (Ladies College). Mihiri Kandanarachchi, Chathuri Abeykoon and Kalyan Veera will be making their debut in the championships. Earlier this meet was named as Asia Pacific Age Group Swimming and Diving Championships. J.A.S. Somachandra will be the manager of the team. Former national and Sri Lanka swimmer E.g.A. Wilson, will be the coach. Mrs. Gothami Peiris of Kingswood College will be the lady chaperon. |
