by PELHAM JURIANSZ

The Sri Lanka Turf Club will be having horse racing at the Nuwara Eliya Race Course on Saturday, August 24.

A special feature of the events will be the Sir Solomon Dias Bandaranaike Challenge Cup which was specially designed by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in memory of her late grandfather.

The President's son, Vimukthi was in Nuwara Eliya two years ago to present it to the winner.

"Sir Solomon Dias Bandaranaike was one of the trustees of the Ceylon Turf Club," said Raja Sinnathuray, committee member of the Sri Lanka Turf Club.

The races will be as follows:

The first one will be for the Sir Solomon Dias Badaranaike Memorial Challenge Cup for thoroughbred horses in Class 1, followed by the Lidechsi Cup for thoroughbred horses in Class 1 and 2. The third race for the day will be the Swedish Cup for thoroughbred horses in Class 2 and fourthly the Jupiter Cup for thoroughbred horses in Class 3 and Food Brokers Cup for thoroughbreds in Class 4. Premier Agencies Cup donated by Sean Avery for 3/4 bred horses and the Five Star International Cup donated by Arthur Hakel for half bred horses in Class 1 will be the seventh event of the day.

The race meet has been sponsored by the Paper Traders and the meet therefore has been appropriately named the "Paper Trade Challenge". The races are scheduled to start at 10.30 a.m. and will continue till about 1.30 p.m.

Entrance fee will be Rs. 20 per person.

Last year, Nigel Austin bagged the majority of the trophies and it all points to a repeat this year as well. - (P.J.)
