St. Joseph's and Ladies emerge champs at Josephian Golden Jubilee Gala

St. Joseph's College and Ladies College emerged overall boys and girls champions respectively at the Golden Jubilee Swimming and Diving Gala of St. Joseph's College and held at their swimming pool at Darley Road yesterday.

The Josephians collected 142 points to emerge champions by a close margin of three points over S. Thomas College, Mt. Lavinia who had 139 points while Ananda College came in third with 128 points. Ladies College took the top spot with 148 points followed by Mahamaya College, Kandy second with 132 points and St. Bridget's Convent were third with 92 points.

St. Joseph's had wins in the 4 x 50 metres medley relay - boys under-9 - 2.57.16 secs, under-19 - 2.14.37 secs. In the freestyle 4 x 50 metres relay the Josephians won under-9 event 2.40.83 secs, under-11 - 2.22.20 secs. and the under-17 - 1.53.00 secs.

Meanwhile Ladies College had wins in the 4 x 50 metres medley relay (under 15) 2.35.87 secs. and freestyle relay under-15 - 2.17.52 secs.

St. Joseph's and Ladies College also secured second and third positions in both relays. St. Joseph's College and Ladies College were presented the Golden Jubilee Swimming Championships trophies.

Royal College won the Diving Championships while St. Joseph's College were second. Past captains of St. Joseph's College and those who represented Sri Lanka were also honoured.

Shabir A. I. Jafferjee, captain of the St. Joseph's College swimming team in 1965 and Indo-Ceylon diving champion was the chief guest together with Mrs. Fehmida S. Jafferjee.

Shabir A. I. Jafferjee made a fine gesture by donating rupees 100,000 to the college swimming fund. Another old boy Asker Moosajee donated rupees 250,000 to the swimming fund.
