'Coat of Dulux' for Merc. shuttle c'ships by Pelham Juriansz The Dulux Mercantile Open Badminton Championship starts today at the S. Thomas' College Courts, Mount Lavinia with 280 participants. This is the fifth successive year that CIC Paints are sponsoring the "Dulux" Championships. This consistency is purely due to the hard work and commitment from the MBA(established in 1983) in developing the sport of Badminton. CIC Paints sponsors upto three badminton Tournaments a year and this is the second for the year. Today, 18th, the men's singles qualifying rounds and the Ladies singles will be worked out followed by the Men's Doubles(Qualifying rounds), Ladies singles(Quarter finals), Men's singles(3rd and 4th rounds), Ladies doubles and Men's doubles(3rd and 4th rounds). Speaking at the Press Conference at the CIC office Gerald de Saram, MD of CIC said that DULUX is a household name and badminton is a game enjoyed by the whole family. "Watching the Commonwealth games was indeed exhilarating especially the Badminton matches but unfortunately the Sri Lankans didn't meet upto expectations. There is absolutely no reason why we Sri Lankans can't match upto the Malaysian Standards, because physically we are not much different to the Malaysians." said de Saram. In fact we should not be too disheartened at the performance of our Badminton players at the Commonwealth games because apart from the performance of Susanthika Jayasinghe our badminton players fared best at the Commonwealth Games. Gamini Jayasuriya, President MBA said that this year we have more entries and this augurs well for the improvement of badminton as this year more Mercantile firms are participating. The Tournament continues till August 21st (Wednesday). |
