Commerce Ministry to promote 'Hawker Street' concept

The popular 'Hawker Street' concept promoting the outdoor dining experience which is similar to those in Singapore and Thailand will be promoted on a larger scale to benefit consumers and the food industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake said last recently.

Speaking at the promotion conducted by the Sri Lanka Food Processors Association at Torrington Avenue, the Minister said this was an ideal opportunity for traditional outdoor caterers to improve their business. Minister Karunanayake said that his Ministry will venture into this new field to attract foreign tourists as well.

He said the Hawker Street in Singapore attracted a record number of locals as well as visitors daily. "This is a money spinner", he remarked. The Commerce Ministry will co-operate with the private sector to promote this new dining-out service in areas outside Colombo as well, he said.
