National Insurance Congress focuses on health, long-term care

The National Insurance Congress 2002, under the theme 'The role of the insurance industry in dealing with the challenges of health and long-term care', will be held on August 30 at the BMICH.

The chief guest at the congress, organised by the Sri Lanka Insurance Institute (SLII), will be the Director General of the Insurance Board of Sri Lanka Dr Dayanath Jayasuriya. The congress, being held for the second time, will have four sessions.

The theme was selected very carefully to facilitate discussions leading to current issues in the healthcare sector in the country and to identify opportunities in the long-term care market, said an organiser.

He said that Sri Lanka as a country will be faced with the challenges of dealing with the issues arising from the emerging aging population in the country.

Therefore, the discussions at the congress are expected to make a significant contribution in identifying solutions for the national issue.

The objectives of the congress are to discuss current issues affecting all stakeholders and obtain the different view points, introduce new technology and discuss new topics to facilitate the evolution of new trends for the financial services industry, the organiser said.

Senior Consultant and Actuary NMG Financial Services S. Devchand will speak on introducing long-term care while Managing Director of Industrial and Commercial Insurance Brokers Hema Wijeratne will speak on the future of health insurance in Sri Lanka. Professor Ravindra Fernando will speak on the role of the medical profession in making long-term care a reality while Lead Specialist Financial Sector Development Department of the World Bank Rodney P. Lester will speak on pension reforms in Sri Lanka.

SLII, the educational body of the Sri Lankan insurance industry, conducts various programmes to assist the members of the insurance industry in their professional development. These include courses for beginners as well as professionals. It also conducts a series of programmes to support professional members in continuous professional development which is a requirement of the Chartered Insurance Institute, UK.

SLII also conducts a diploma course on insurance, which is parallel to the exams conducted by the Chartered Insurance Institute of UK. The institute also conducts examinations for the Chartered Insurance Institute, UK, Indian Insurance Institute and Australian Insurance Institute.
