Seashells - a star resort in 'Little Rome'

by BEVERLEY JANSZ

Located on a picturesque stretch of the beach in Negombo, known as 'little Rome', Seashells Hotel promises 'ideal tropical therapy' with its relaxing atmosphere that soothes the mind and body.

The swimming pool overlooking the restaurant

Built in 1972, originally the hotel had 40 rooms. It now has 60 standard rooms and 12 air conditioned rooms which offer a magnificent view looking out onto the emerald sea. The rooms are double or twin beds, tastefully decorated with pretty arrangements of fresh flowers for arriving guests. Wide terraces on the ground floor and balconies on the upper floor keep the room cool. The restaurant, reception and sitting area are designed to make the most of the sea view and are open and airy. Adjoining the restaurant is the main bar, which is large and pleasant with table tennis, darts and a TV. The hotel also has a pool bar overlooking the beach.

When holidaying, good food is important and at Seashells Hotel, guests are offered all three meals in buffet style with a wide variety of both Sri Lankan and Western cuisine to choose from, prepared by Executive Chef, D. L. r. Liyanage and his team of experienced cooks.

The hotel has mini conference facility for about ten guests. The sports and entertainment facilities available at the hotel is wide and varied. They include magic shows, fire limbo dances, cultural shows, boating in the Hamilton canal/sea, indoor games and archery etc.

The all-inclusive package offered by Seashells has become very popular amongst tourists. The hotel also arranges bird watching safaris, visits to the cultural city of Yapahuwa and Dambadeniya. The theme nights at the hotel too are very popular especially amongst foreign tourists, the new General Manager Seashells Hotel, Gemunu Karunaratne said. Gemunu is an experienced and versatile hotelier with 21 years of service with the Jetwing family alone. He has injected to his staff that warm hospitality is the keynote to success in the hotel industry.

The family of Jetwing Hotels has set new accents for caring for their guests and is able to offer them a journey to a new dimension (the journey to your inner self). As a result of this a new addition to Negombo would be the Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions. This consist of 15 luxury air conditioned bungalows which ensure maximum privacy for those seeking in-house Aryuvedic therapy in a quiet peaceful atmosphere.

The other hotels in Negombo that are owned and managed by Jetwing Hotels Ltd. are Royal Oceanic Hotel, Blue Oceanic Beach Hotel, Sea Garden Hotel and Hotel Sunset Beach. The directors are Herbert Cooray, Sunil Mendis, V. K. Wickramasinghe, Rajan Yatawara Hiran Cooray, Ruan Samarasinghe and Ms. Shiromal Cooray.
