Trinco 'musical' fracas : Row over song demands

by ANTON NONIS

Twenty-one persons including three policemen were injured during a musical show on the final day of the 'Yuga Dekma' industrial exhibition in Trincomalee last week are still receiving hospital treatment, according to police. Nineteen suspects arrested in this connection were produced in Courts and remanded till September 2.

The musical fiesta which started around 11 p.m., was going on smoothly with thousands of music lovers in the audience, clapping and dancing. As Sinhala songs were on right from the start, a request was by a section of the audience to the organisers for a switch to Tamil songs, which was readily acceded.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police, Upali Hewage, a bit of restlessness was observed among some audience when Tamil songs commenced, and played one after another. Suddenly, some had dashed climbed on to the stage and became unruly. Police had to intervene and the musical show was stopped abruptly around 2 a.m.

Shortwhile later, some in the crowd went berserk, and armed with clubs and weapons went on the rampage, causing damage to houses and properties and vehicles. The 19 suspects will appear for an identification parade on Sept. 2. According to SSP Hewage, some more wanted in this connection, are evading arrest.

Investigations are being conducted by a police team instructed by SSP Hewage under the directions of the Deputy Inspector General, Nissanka Patikirikorale.
